Winter is here, and thousands of magnificent gray whales are making their way back down the west coast right now, heading to the warm waters of Mexico.

According to Oregon State Parks, nearly 25,000 gray whales travel south in the annual migration to the warm lagoons of Baja, Mexico, from mid-December through mid-January.

Winter Whale Watch Week is usually held between Christmas and New Years’. When the pandemic is behind us, during whale watch weeks, you will again find whale watch interpreters stationed at the Cape Perpetua Visitors Center and at Cook’s Chasm Lookout, 3 and 4 miles south of downtown Yachats on Hwy 101.
