Saturday (Noon to 3 p.m.) Walk groups leave on the hour by shuttle bus from the Cape Perpetua Visitor Center. Or you may sign up for a walk and meet your walk group at the Gwynn Creek parking lot of Neptune State Park, about 4 miles south of Yachats. (The shuttle will arrive at the parking lot at about 5 minutes after the hour.)
Sunday (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) There is no shuttle bus on Sunday. The walk group meets on the hour at the Gwynn Creek parking lot of Neptune State Park, about 4 miles south of Yachats. (Please note: The 11 a.m. walk is leader's choice, Gwynn Creek Trail or Coast Trail.)
On both Saturday and Sunday, the walks begin from the meadow east of Hwy 101 across from the parking lot. (Getting to the meadow requires crossing Hwy 101.)
The walk covers about ½ mile with moderate up & down. Ecosystem: Classic old-growth Sitka spruce and Douglas-fir lowland riparian forest with red alder dominated floodplain. Fungi that may be encountered: King bolete a.k.a. Porcini, Steinpilz, Cep (Boletus edulis), Amanita spp. (poisonous), Lobster (Hypomyces lactiflorum), Short-stemmed Russula (Russula brevipes), Shrimp (Russula xerampelina), Rosy russula (Russula rosaceae, toxic), False matsutake a.k.a. Cat's Paw (Catathelasma ventricosa), Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius), Fairy ring mushroom (Mirasimus oreades), Lepiota spp., Naematoloma fasciculare (poisonous), False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca).
