Saturday and Sunday walks begin from the meadow east of Hwy 101 across from the Gwynn Creek parking lot of Neptune State Park. (Getting to the meadow requires crossing Hwy 101.)
The walk covers about ½ mile with moderate up & down. Ecosystem: Classic old-growth Sitka spruce and Douglas-fir lowland riparian forest with red alder dominated floodplain. Fungi that may be encountered: King bolete a.k.a. Porcini, Steinpilz, Cep (Boletus edulis), Amanita spp. (poisonous), Lobster (Hypomyces lactiflorum), Short-stemmed Russula (Russula brevipes), Shrimp (Russula xerampelina), Rosy russula (Russula rosaceae, toxic), False matsutake a.k.a. Cat's Paw (Catathelasma ventricosa), Golden Chanterelle (Cantharellus cibarius), Fairy ring mushroom (Mirasimus oreades), Lepiota spp., Naematoloma fasciculare (poisonous), False Chanterelle (Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca).
